Mat Williamson has a habit of running his best when the big money is on the line.
This St. Catharines, Ontario racer did just that Saturday night at the Fulton Speedway, when he won the 38th Outlaw 200 for 358 modified stock cars.
For his second win in this season-ending Fulton special. Williamson picked up another $20,000 winner’s check.
“There was plenty of hard close racing among some great drivers out there tonight,” said the winner in victory lane. “But favorites like Matt Sheppard and Stewart Friesen fell out with mechanical problems; polesitter and early leader Jimmy Phelps got spun out late chasing me down and Mike Mahaney got penalized, so you could say I survived.”
The 200-lap event on the 3/8-mile Fulton started with a huge 47-car field of 358 modifieds taking the initial green flag. After Phelps, Tim Fuller and Williamson led in the early going, the winner took the lead for good on the 129th circuit and fought off Jimmy Phelps in the closing laps for his second Outlaw triumph.
Second-place finisher Darren Smith had an up and down evening. The Binghamton driver had to pit early and fell back to 30th. But Smith charged back in the closing laps to wind up second at the finish.
Sportsman champion Matt Janczuk sold one of his sportsman cars to his friend Nick Zielinski. Nick dropped a 358 engine in the sportsman chassis and put Janczuk in the drivers seat. He was rewarded with a third-place podium finish.
With ten laps remaining, Phelps was pressing the winner for the top spot, but was spun out by Mike Mahaney. Phelps lost his chance for the win and Mahabey was penalized to the rear of the field,
Matt Meade finished fourth, with veteran Alan Johnson fifth. Mike Maresca, Dalton Slack, Alex Yankowski, Brian Calabrese and Mike Mahaney completed the top ten finishers in the $60,000 feature event. The Outlaw 200 drew a capacity crowd to this Route 57 oval.
